Media Author Review
United States
Boston Globe
"Keira Knightley takes the helm (...) The actress becomes the movie's indisputable star. If this still isn't quite what it takes to strike pirate gold, it sails a lot closer to the wind than last time."
United States
Rolling Stone
"The good news first: Keith Richards totally rocks it playing pirate daddy to Johnny Depp’s Capt. (…) So what’s the bad news? Richards is onscreen for barely two minutes. The rest [is] (...) an overload of digital effects and shameless setups for 'Pirates 4' (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Variety
"Unlike last year's bloated sequel, at least possesses some semblance of a destination, making it slightly more coherent -- if no less numbing during the protracted finale."
United States
The New York Times
"The cannibals, coconuts and landlocked locations have been replaced by the high-seas high jinks that made the first film so enjoyable."
United States
Slate
"The viewer passes through confusion and boredom into a state of Buddhist passivity (...) Like all abstract art, 'At World's End' is best approached non-narratively, as an experience rather than a story"
United States
New York Post
"It’s not a total shipwreck, but abandon hope all ye seeking a coherent, much less satisfying, narrative. Expect instead a reported $300 million worth of eye candy, delivered with enormous technical skill."
United Kingdom
Empire
"The plot's a trippy, twisty mess, and it's far too long, but it looks fantastic and makes some bold choices in its execution. And once again Jack's back to save the day (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Chicago Reader
"[It] ends up overloaded with characters and subplots (...) The players are all upstaged by the astonishing special effects, superior to those of earlier installments"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Fortunately, it's more entertaining than watching Depp pick his nose, but this is one hulking, cumbersome beast of a movie (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
AV Club
"The last, longest, and most tedious of the bunch, 'At World's End' sags under reams of exposition that not only fail to clarify the story, but take away from the slapstick tomfoolery that made the first film (...) escapist fun"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"[It] represents a considerable step up from the soulless 'Dead Man's Chest' (...) It still takes an awfully long time (two hours and 47 minutes) getting to where it needs to go"
United States
Entertainment Weekly
"'At World’s End' is so frantic and dissociated that it barely pretends to make sense (...) Fun yet exhausting"
