Media Author Review
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"'Farming' is rooted in rich, complex, potentially gripping material. But [the director] slaps this story together with so little subtlety, he ends up seriously diluting its dramatic power."
United States
The New York Times
"[It] is both audacious and slightly unsatisfying (...) A mystery movie in which the author investigates himself — and doesn’t fully share the answers."
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"The vicious racism and language of the period are presented with a sickening authenticity (...) Damson Idris proves that he has the presence and skill to carry a film"
United States
Variety
"The film is remarkable for its lack of self-pity, but it makes the experience of 'Farming' a merciless one for the audience too"
United Kingdom
The Times
"Akinnuoye-Agbaje, is drawing on his life here, and his account of the hero’s agonies is commendably intense, but its lack of subtlety blunts the film’s force (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"[It] is gruelling but intensely heartfelt (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Los Angeles Times
"One-note but convincing, Idris’ performance seethes with furious abandon (...) Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s admirable life story gets reduced to its most sensational chapter."
United Kingdom
Time Out
"If 'Farming' lacks a scalpel-like subtlety to dissect the material, it still presents a confronting depiction of self-loathing and psychological abuse (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Empire
"There’s a compelling film buried somewhere in 'Farming' (...) but it is ultimately lost amidst the unrelenting violence the film continually subjects us to (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
Cineuropa
"[It] has a visceral quality that gives the world depicted a sense of dread and fear, and the topic deserves discussion. But the good work is undone by the over-egged performances and the equation of aggression with emotion"
