"[It] is dazzling on the surface, but what lies beneath? Maybe nothing (...) You’ve got a head-trip horror movie with something for everyone — except, perhaps, for those who want to emerge feeling more haunted than assaulted."  NEU

"[It] both pulls you in with its intriguing central dramatic situation and pushes you out with some mightily far-fetched plot contrivances (...) There’s certainly no faulting the actors (...) Bardem is dominant"  NEU

"A devouring and restless experience (...) This is as formally provocative as it is thematically insistent, draped in horror tropes and religious overtones (...) An original, strikingly unconventional piece"  POS

"It tries so desperately to be crazy and disturbing that all we can see is the effort made and the money spent. No wonder there’s an exclamation mark in its title. Aronofsky just doesn’t know when to quit."  NEG

"'Mother!' Is a second-rate, self-aggrandizing tour de force. (...) Most of the dialogue and effects are clunky, repetitive, second-rate. A minute or so of David Lynch’s latest 'Twin Peaks' series has more irrational menace. For all its feverish activity, 'Mother!' feels static."  NEG
