Blindspotting

Comedy Collin is trying to make it through his final days of probation for an infamous arrest he can’t wait to put behind him. Always by his side is his fast-talking childhood bestie, Miles, who has a knack for finding trouble. When Collin’s chance for a fresh start is interrupted by a life-changing missed curfew, his friendship with Miles is forced out of its comfortable buddy-comedy existence, and the Bay boys are set on a spiraling collision course with each other. [+]
Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"The most exciting cinematic take on contemporary race relations since 'Do the Right Thing' nearly 30 years ago (...) [It] captures the many forces (...) now boiling over in modern-day Oakland."
United States
IndieWire
"Carlos Lopez Estrada's debut taps into potent ideas about race in America, even as it struggles to make them work."
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Vital and messy in equal measure (...) 'Blindspotting' wins no points for subtlety (...) The speechifying and manipulative plot twists are overdone (...) but the emotion behind the calculation still stings."
United States
The New York Times
"Its lively frequency is embedded in the writing, bolstered by Carlos López Estrada’s direction, and kept buoyant by the performers."
United States
The Wrap
"[It] puts far more on its plate than it knows how to handle (...) One consistent virtue of the film is the cinematography by Robby Baumgartner"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"A striking but frustrating film about race in a changing Oakland (...) [It] betrays instincts both realistic and fantastical, insightful and banal."
United States
AV Club
"Impressive (...) Downright revelatory: It crackles to life without a surfeit of surface flash."
United States
Slant
"It takes aim at myriad targets and bluntly satirizing them in disparate styles that never mesh into a cohesive whole (...) When Blindspotting keeps things simple (...) there's a sense of purpose (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
