The Hours

Drama In 1951, Laura Brown, a pregnant housewife, is planning a party for her husband, but she can't stop reading the novel 'Mrs. Dalloway'. Clarissa Vaughn, a modern woman living in present times is throwing a party for her friend Richard, a famous author dying of AIDS. These two stories are simultaneously linked to the work and life of Virginia Woolf, who's writing the novel mentioned before.

"Considerable intelligence and strategic finesse have been brought to bear on this handsomely mounted adaptation"
United States

"[It] reduces Woolf and her art to a set of feminist stances and a few plot points, without reference to style or form"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Its constituent, handsomely mounted panels are inhabited by three earnest, meticulous performances (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"A fascinating and ultimately successful stunt in its cross-cutting among the decades (...) David Hare lets the themes (...) ring clearly in all three stories"
United States
AV Club
"However much it apes its source material, 'The Hours' always seems to strain for effect, and to live for the applause that follows."
United Kingdom
Empire
"Wonderfully acted, elegantly written and tightly directed (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Slant
"The women of 'The Hours' become little more than sudsy abstractions of cross-generational female repression (…) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 5)"
