Media Author Review
United States
"'Broken Embraces': Wholly Delightful. (...) the presence of Penélope Cruz is incendiary, (...) And Mr. Almodóvar's love of movies informs every frame of this beautiful film."
United States
rogerebert.com
"Look at Almodovar's command of framing here (...) Never has he made a film more visually pulsating, and Almodovar is not shy (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Variety
"A restless, rangy and frankly enjoyable genre-juggler that combines melodrama, comedy and more noir-hued darkness than ever before, the pic is held together by the extraordinary force of Almodovar's cinematic personality. But while its four-way in extremis love story dazzles, it never really catches fire."
United States
Rolling Stone
"Cruz exudes a sensual aura of mystery that holds you spellbound. And Almodóvar, a true poet of cinema, creates images —horrifying and healing— that live inside your head like a waking dream (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
The New York Times
"The visual and aural textures are lush and sensual (...) and yet the rich colors and deep sonorities somehow illuminate an unusually austere emotional terrain."
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"It is a perfect type of pleasure which leaves one not unsatisfied exactly but with a feeling that its substance has vanished into the air like smoke (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"Sex, artistry, delirium: no one knows these things like Pedro, or sticks them in more devastating couture (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Chicago Reader
"The first Almodovar feature I've ever really liked, an expertly fashioned melodrama that steers mercifully clear of his usual puckishness and star-mongering"
