- London during World War II. Sarah Miles is a passionate woman trapped in a barren marriage who meets novelist Maurice Bendrix during a party given by her husband Henri, a respectable but uninteresting state official. The two begin a passionate affair. But during a German bombing raid, Bendrix's house is hit by a bomb that surprises the lovers in bed.
