Synopsis
MCQUEEN: THE MAN & LE MANS resumes filming at the legendary 24 hour racing track, 44 years after the original film LE MANS launched its production in 1970. The documentary chronicles the gripping, untold story of iconic movie star Steve McQueen’s quest to make ‘the ultimate racing motion picture’. The film Le Mans was a lifetime’s dream for the legendary actor, but the reality of making his opus would be very different after his ‘golden decade’ of films (including Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape). McQueen could not predict the toll Le Mans would exact: control over this very personal project, his salary and profits, key personal and professional friendships, and ultimately, his marriage. This film is the story of obsession, betrayal and ultimate vindication. It is the story of how one of the most volatile, charismatic stars of his generation, who seemingly lost so much he held dear in the pursuit of his dream, nevertheless followed it to the end. When the film was released in 1971, LE MANS was misunderstood by McQueen’s critics, but more than four decades later, LE MANS is regarded as a classic, capturing arguably the greatest era in racing like no other film before and none since. "When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting" - Steve McQueen.
