Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"Though there’s grounded, real-world sentiment infused into the narrative (...) Chase struggles to craft viscerally stimulating supernatural frights to complement those enlightened thoughts"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Taut, effective techno terror (...) [Chase] expanded with great assurance in both craft and storytelling from his imaginative 5-minute short, 'Larry'"
United States
IGN
"A misfire on multiple levels, from the thinly drawn leads to lack of tension. It fails to offer any real scares and it's hard to connect on an emotional level with the characters"
United States
IndieWire
"There’s enough potential here for something great. As it stands, 'Come Play' is merely serviceable, and leaves you with the feeling that a much better game was lost in the shuffle."
United States
AV Club
"The result is involving, but a little pat as drama (...) As a horror movie, though, it’s often diabolical fun"
United States
The New York Times
"Alexa, find me a derivative thriller (...) [It] feels secondhand in its overarching conceit, its scare tactics and even its sentimentality"
United States
Slant
"In the end, theme takes too much priority over threatening atmosphere (...) But the film can only get so far on Robertson’s performance and its spectator’s protective instincts (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
The Wrap
"A routine, jump-scare-laden PG-13 horror tale featuring a cast that’s above the film’s paygrade."
United States
New York Post
"The film is second-rate horror, but watchable enough (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Common Sense Media
"A well-made production from top to bottom, and it effectively encourages strong empathy for its central characters (...) Robertson is remarkable"
Canada
Exclaim!
"The film is forgettable, and will ultimately lose itself amongst the laundry list of cash-grab 'spooky' horror films released during the season"
United States
rogerebert.com
"With the exception of a few strong sequences in the scare department, it’s an inconsistent, flat film that is too often reliant on jump scares instead of atmosphere. It is unwilling to really dig into its darkest ideas (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"This is very much a mixed bag: credible and well researched in some respects, but slipping up badly in other places (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
