Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"A largely satisfying reboot (...) a surprisingly clever monster mash best described as the “Batman Begins” of Zilla Thrillers."
United States
Forbes
"The movie cannily plays on things we know from the character's long history (...) The bureaucratic satire can get a little too repetitive"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"It’s an origin story of course. But it’s also a delicate spoof of disaster films like it, and has some genuinely funny moments (...) here’s an intangible quality to this Godzilla that Edwards never quite captured, and which is always welcome."
United States
AV Club
"A wry, very Japanese sense of humor (...) As far as Godzilla movies go, this one is (...) a smashing return to form."
United States
The Playlist
"This is a film guided by perception and insight, presenting a purposeful, gritty, and well-written entry into the canon, but its emphasis on politics sometimes sees the film losing its human touch."
United States
rogerebert.com
"Anno and co-director Shinji Higuchi's (...) idiosyncratic emphasis on the endless discussions and politicking that precedes the Japanese military is genuinely exciting (…) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
The Wrap
"'Shin Godzilla' makes great points about how unprepared governments are to deal with mass evacuations and enormous disasters (...) The destruction here is chillingly realistic"
United States
The New York Times
"It’s choppy and full of special effects that seem deliberately designed not to impress. The story is so sketchy that it’s hard to follow (...) The humor, not the monster, is what you’re left wanting more of."
United States
Bloody Disgusting
"A rare standalone entry in the canon that will surely last the test of time right along the ’54 original."
