- Synopsis
- Two American scientists have researched the biblical ten plagues of Egypt, looking for scientific explanations for them. They decide that the first plague, the river's incarnadining and the death of their fish, was the result of an algal bloom. The other nine plagues then occurred either as a logical ecological progression (frogs, lice, flies) or coincidental catastrophes (hail, locusts, darkness from a sandstorm). The mysterious and apparently supernatural tenth 'plague', the deaths of all first-born, was caused by the first-born sons entering mildew- contaminated granaries to retrieve the only food left to the ailing Egyptians. The overall hypothesis shows how interconnected ecosystems are and how single ecological catastrophes can bring whole societies to their knees, perhaps even today.
