- Synopsis
- The nearly forgotten first feature by director Gillo Pontecorvo is an engaging artifact that whips up some strong suspense, in which a poor Italian fisherman named Squarcio (Yves Montand) supports his growing family (including Alida Valli as his wife) through the illegal procedure of dynamite fishing--tossing handmade grenades into the ocean to capture the KO'ed seafood. Unfortunately for Squarcio, the island village has a new Coast Guard commander who's determined to stop such lawbreaking activity.
