Black Rain

Action. Mystery. Thriller Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) and Charlie Vincent (Andy García) are two New York cops whose job to escort a vicious assassin back to his native Japan leads the two Americans into Osaka's exotic underworld and straight into the center of a raging, brutal "Yakuza" gangland battle.
Media Author Review
United States
Rolling Stone
"Originality is not this thriller’s strong suit. Style is. 'Black Rain' is exotic, energized entertainment with director Ridley Scott nosing his camera into Osaka’s dark, unfamiliar corners."
United States
rogerebert.com
"The story of 'Black Rain' is thin and prefabricated and doesn't stand up to much scrutiny, so Scott distracts us with overwrought visuals. (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Variety
"This gripping crime thriller about hardboiled NY cop Michael Douglas tracking a yakuza hood in Osaka, Japan, boasts magnificent lensing and powerfully baroque production design."
United Kingdom
Empire
"No matter how well dressed, the movie can’t escape the gravitational pull of formula. Without a convincing subtext, Black Rain is pretty dull fare indeed"
United States
Los Angeles Times
"The movie becomes a triumph of matter over mind. It's a blast of pure sensation, shallow but scintillating, like a great rock melody,"
United States
The Washington Post
"With its teeming Asian landscape, its dark kaleidoscopic palette and its heavily layered composition, it's reminiscent of Blade Runner. But this is an atmosphere that needs Sam Spade, not Dirty Harry."
United States
Miami Herald
"Scott's work is always fascinating to watch, (...) And Douglas now has something heroic about him that enhances, if it doesn't quite transcend, the plot-by- numbers"
United States
The New York Times
"At its best, Black Rain has the glitzy quality of an extremely long and clever television commercial. One can't be sure what is being sold, but the eye isn't bored"
United States
Chicago Tribune
"This cop thriller, set largely in Osaka, Japan, is so full of screeching tires, flashing neon and extravagant violence that it's almost physically painful to watch"
