Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"It would be generous to call the film a continuation of the 'Chainsaw' saga. It’s more like a blood-soaked but unscary footnote."
United States
The Wrap
"To some, a film with undeveloped themes, thin characters, and superficial gore might seem like a bad thing. To connoisseurs of the slasher genre, it’s all part of a well-balanced breakfast."
United States
IGN
"'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' stinks like a basement full of corpses as Leatherface becomes just another hulking villain — not exactly the fresh start franchise diehards might have otherwise welcomed."
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"[It] doesn’t exactly offer anything new (...) but gorehound fans who rejoice at watching people’s innards fall out of their bodies will find much to appreciate"
United States
AV Club
"It might be the furthest any filmmaker has strayed from what made the original so timelessly terrifying"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"There’s little time for thinking, probably for the best, given the thinness of the material and some of the mistakes made within it, but first-time director David Blue Garcia finds ample time for suspense (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Deadline
"The first entry on my worst of the year list (...) The actors try their best to navigate an unfortunate script, but nothing can save this Netflix movie from caving under the weight of its irrationality."
United States
The New York Times
"[A] poorly plotted, efficiently executed Netflix blood bath"
United States
Detroit News
"It achieves its goal. Director David Blue Garcia, working with [his team] (...) keeps things simple, pointed and roaring."
United States
IndieWire
"It delivers plenty of blood spattered, gut-spilling gore to satisfy genre lover’s bloodlust, even if we’ve pretty much seen everything a chainsaw can do by now."
United States
Slant
"A deeply miscalculated mix of incoherent social commentary and over-the-top gore (...) [The script] juggles more ideas than it cares to actually chew (…) Rating: ★ (out of 4)"
United States
Forbes
"It may be an engaging enough return to form for fans of the franchise, although it misses the charm that makes the original so memorable."
United States
SlashFilm
"This is a movie that very much wants to call back to the original — and in doing so, it inadvertently reminds us of how much better the original was, and how bad this is"
United Kingdom
Digital Spy
"It's undeniably fun to see Leatherface unleashed again and in terms of being an effective and bloody horror ride, there's a lot to enjoy in 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' if you've got a strong enough stomach (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"Sarah Yarkin and Elsie Fisher are terrific as the sisters, who are the closest thing to fully realized characters in the film. Everybody else is just dramatic chum (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
Canada
CBR
"[It] shreds through its promising premise with abandon, sacrificing the film's compelling leads for brutal and senseless gore."
Canada
JoBlo
"The film lacks a certain mass appeal to attract casual moviegoers (...) That being said, director David Blue Garcia along with cinematographer Ricardo Diaz, create some solid tension and visuals that stick with you"
United States
The Playlist
"[It] bumbles and bungles along the journey (...) But [it] couches menace in Burnham's hulking physique, holds back nothing in the bloodshed department, and ends on a beat so shocking that it makes [it] worth watching"
United States
rogerebert.com
"The lack of narrative depth would be fine if [it] was effective as a horror movie. It's not. The staging and execution of the violence is uninspired. No tension, no suspense, no characters to care about (…) Rating: ★ (out of 4)"
United States
Ready Steady Cut
"All gore, nothing more, and that's okay (...) I was intrigued to see what would happen with this installment for better or worse. Dare I say curiosity didn't kill the cat here? (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
Ireland
Irish Times
"Absolute bloody rubbish (...) There’s very little to be said for this squalid sequel to the 1974 original (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
