"Ricki and the Flash" seems like a squandered opportunity for this humane, curious and liberal-minded filmmaker to reflect on some uncomfortable realities. This isn't really rock 'n' roll. It's easy listening.
United States
Rolling Stone
"Jonathan Demme, with music in his DNA, offers a heartfelt salute to those who play the underside of rock & roll because, well, they have to. Too bad the rest of the movie is dime-a-dozen family soap opera (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Ricki and the Flash's emotional intensity creeps up on you, and it's all due to the performances. Everyone's sympathetic, everyone's got depth. (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Hitfix
"If you’re wondering whether you’ll believe Streep is a convincing rock musician, please. It’s Meryl Streep here. She sounds like she’s ready to open for Bruce Springsteen."
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Streep is pitch-perfect but the film hits more than a few false notes. (...) Even with its well-observed moments, the movie's nonmusical interactions, whether reaching for laughs or poignancy, too often feel flat and forced."
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"Though this is the cinematic equivalent of an album of cover tunes by artists who have created much more dazzling original work, it’s a sweet, smart and funny confection (...) Rating. ★★★ (out of four)"
United States
Variety
"This is a shaggy, easily distractible film that consistently defies expectations to both charming and baffling effect."
United States
The Wrap
"An assemblage of almost-characters in an almost-story, resulting in a very disappointing almost-movie."
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"A breezy but touching dysfunctional family dramedy, with real heart and some genuine musical soul."
United States
Entertainment Weekly
"Ricki and the Flash isn’t a great movie; its archetypes are tired and its plot turns textbook. (...) Still, Ricki raises smart questions (...) and even the shamelessly corny sing-along finale wrings a few real tears out.
United States
Boston Globe
"'Ricki and the Flash' feels like 'Stella Dallas' as remade by Jean Renoir - it's a humanist suburban fable"
