Media Author Review
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"There almost isn't a single shot in it where every member of the cast isn't Acting (...) The result is, at times, insufferably pleased with itself"
United States
Variety
"In other hands, this story (...) might’ve turned into an overly manipulative tearjerker. But thanks to Michell and a fine cast, it works admirably well"
United States
IndieWire
"Michell, screenwriter Christian Thorpe (adapting his own original screenplay), and a talented cast strike a delicate balance in a domestic drama that ably combines heartbreak and humor"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"A starry, but flat, drama that lacks insight and compelling conflict (...) It’s less of a film and more of an actors’ workshop, an exercise for everyone involved but meaningless to us (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"As lovely as 'Blackbird' can be, it’s never particularly insightful or compelling — for a film meant to celebrate life, the storytelling is curiously moribund"
United States
The Playlist
"We’ve probably all seen enough movies about the familial woes of upper-middle-class white families. But if you’re in the mood for one more, well, 'Blackbird' has a lot to offer"
United States
The New York Times
"[A] drama so inauthentic and maudlin that the terminal illness suffered by its central character is no more than a suction device for the audience’s tears"
United States
rogerebert.com
"Director Roger Michell finds some nicely-observed moments amid the heavy-handed dialogue (...) and one-dimensional characters (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
The Times
"A decent remake of the 2014 Danish hit 'Silent Heart' (...) Sarandon shines above the somewhat creaky material (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Rolling Stone
"There are too many splendid little touches in this tale of letting go to dismiss it entirely, and too many latebreaking wrong turns it takes to completely forgive it (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"
