Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"Garland's brittle, beautiful directorial debut is a digital-age 'Frankenstein' refashioned as a battle of the sexes (...) a sleek, spare chamber piece"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Garland brings little fresh to this familiar man vs. machine theme (...) Ex Machina looks cool and sleek, but ultimately proves flimsy and underpowered"
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"This is bewitchingly smart science fiction of a type that's all too rare. Its intelligence is anything but artificial (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of five)"
United Kingdom
Empire
"Stylish, elegant, tense, cerebral, satirical and creepy. Garland’s directorial debut is his best work yet, while Vikander’s bold performance will short your circuits (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of five)"
United Kingdom
Time Out
"An only-too-obvious ‘twist’ and some clunky plotting – how about those sudden power cuts! – drain much of the credibility from a story which promised so much. A bit more intelligence would not have gone amiss (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of five)"
United Kingdom
The Independent
"Novelist and screenwriter Alex Garland's first film as a director takes some very old ideas and gives them an ingenious new spin. (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of five)"
United States
IndieWire
"'Ex Machina' is one of the headiest and most impressive sci-fi debuts since 'Moon', and if we see more than a handful of movies better than it across the next twelve months, 2015 will be a terrific year."
United States
USA Today
"For a first-time director, Garland seems assured. His sharp, sparse dialogue and meticulous direction are equally compelling, and the trio of lead performances are top-notch (...) RatinG: ★★★½ (out of four)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"A thoughtful and at times unnervingly sly film that makes the very most of the burgeoning star power of Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson."
