Synopsis
Girl Play, based on the original play, “Real Girls,” is the true-life story of writers / actors, Robin Greenspan and Lacie Harmon. The motion picture was filmed in Los Angeles in March of 2004. The World Premiere screened to a sold out audience (750 seats) on July 13th, 2004 at Outfest Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at the Regent Showcase Theater in Los Angeles. It was the first film of the festival to completely sell out a screening and after a second screening was added (July 18, 2004) sold more tickets than any other film at Outfest! Girl Play took home two of the sixteen prestigious awards from the festival which screens almost 300 films. Winner of "Outstanding Lesbian Narrative Feature Film" and Winner of "Outstanding Actress in a Film" shared by the two lead actors, Robin Greenspan and Lacie Harmon. The film has since won numerous awards, playing to sold out audiences at film festivals around the World. Wolfe Releasing acquired the US theatrical and video rights and Logo acquired the US cable rights. Girl Play is currently available on DVD and airing on LOGO.

Lacie and Robin met and fell in love eight years ago while rehearsing for a Play in which they were cast as lovers. Several years into the new relationship and feeling so compelled to tell their true love story, they wrote the Play, “Real Girls,” and performed to sold out audiences all over California from 1999 to 2003.

During the lifespan of the play, award-winning film director, Lee Friedlander met and teamed with the couple to create a feature film based on the play. Their quest for financing the film began. The trio realized it they would benefit from outside efforts in addition to their independent fund raising sources to make this lesbian themed romantic comedy film a reality. Though they did raise some money from a handful of generous individual donors, it was not enough to do justice to this compelling and sexy story with unlimited potential.

Having recently refocused her career solely towards directing after more than a decade of producing, Lee began a search of her own for film producers to take on the project. At the same time, Laura and Gina, producing (and life) partners had been on a search for a feature film project to produce independently. The producing pair, having secured independent financing last Fall for a film that ultimately did not come to fruition, were eager to find a feature film project to apply the financing towards and to independently produce. Lee, Gina and Laura had been introduced a couple of years earlier while screening other films at the Fresno REEL Pride International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (which, incidentally, is now one of their favorite film festival events each year.)

After an arranged live reading of the play, which was hosted by Lee and performed by Robin and Lacie, the group quickly realized the unique and incredibly positive working chemistry between themselves. Once everyone agreed it was a perfect match, Laura and Gina signed on and ultimately gave the film project a “green light” to begin preproduction. The film went into principle photography less than 30 days later with Michael Negrin as the Director of Photography and co-starring notable talent such as: Dom Deluise, Mink Stole, Lauren Maher, Katherine Randolph and Gina DeVivo.

The filming schedule was very ambitious, averaging more than one location per day, on a combination of Super 16MM and HD formats. Approximately 30 days after the wrap of production, Outfest Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival notified the filmmakers of their acceptance into the festival. The film was scheduled as one of the featured girl films of the 2004 film festival and there was a pre-screening party and post-screening party at Oasis that evening. Editor, Christian White focused all of his energies toward the completion of Girl Play. Highly acclaimed composer, Laura Karpman scores the film, while the film also offers a great selection of original songs from various artists.
