Media Author Review
United States
IndieWire
"A wonderful and demented Western (...) Over time, this unmoored and deeply unexpected mash-up assumes the sharp-toothed defiance of Cinema Novo classics"
United States
Variety
"A visually impressive but unevenly paced thriller that feels as if it’s meant to be analyzed more than enjoyed"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"A paranoid revenge western that reminded me of Clint Eastwood in 'A Fistful of Dollars' (...) It is an utterly distinctive film-making, executed with ruthless clarity and force (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"[It combines] sunny small-town comedy with a fable-like plot and a sprinkle of magic realism. It's an impressively rich mix, but perhaps a little too rich, feeling both overstuffed and undercooked in places."
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"The combination of satire and savagery is pretty fierce and intriguingly unique (...) [It] leaves your preconceptions hacked up and rolling all over the place (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"[It] is a bracingly confrontational commentary on the direction the country is taking in the Bolsonaro era. Propulsive storytelling doesn’t come at the expense of the vividly sketched personality of the community"
United States
The Wrap
"It’s disturbing and messy, a fever dream for a disturbing and messy time in Brazil. And occasionally, it’s a lot of fun, too (...) [It] delights in the trappings of genre."
Cineuropa
"'Bacurau' is a choral work which isn’t easy to pin down, with all its zigzagging between genres, but which proves its worth as the film progresses (...) It’s a lesson in style"
United Kingdom
The Times
"Futuristic satire descends into bland gore‑fest (...) I liked the first half (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
London Evening Standard
"It’s agonisingly suspenseful. It’s laugh out loud funny, too (...) 'Bacurau' is in the same class as 'Parasite' (…) Rating: ★★★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Time Out
"Maybe the film loses its head a bit at [the end], with its deeper message lost in the epic bloodshed, but the chances are you’ll be having too much fun to mind (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
Ireland
Irish Times
"The film keeps the nice and nasty surprises coming. Braga, Kier and Pereira are standouts in a stellar cast (…) Rating: ★★★★★ (out of 5)"
