- Synopsis
- In late 2007, film critic and programmer Mark Peranson was convened by Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra to play Joseph, Jesus’ father in the movie El cant dels ocells, his free version of the Three Kings’ journey to the nativity manger. The radical nature of the experience of film-making according to Serra, as demonstrated in his previous movie Honor de Cavalleria, was the target of Peranson’s camera. Among with playing Joseph’s part, Peranson also devoted himself to the recording of the making-of from within, absolutely immersed in the shooting, without any distance. With a very parsimonious contemplation style, certainly close to Serra’s cinema, fulfilled with long shots where the slight happening mixes with the accident, Peranson finds a universe of freedom and limitations, doubts and certainties, concentration and dispersion. And in the very heart of this film there is the utopia of a group of crusaders pursuing a dream, with their libertarian ways of film-making, trying to become a natural, poetic and mythical flare, like the singing of birds, or as that silky fog chased by the crew at a certain time.
