- Gérard is an ex-reporter and member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He has moved back to Hocelaga, the neighbourhood where he grew up, and now he owes his life to an untied shoelace. Because of this mishap, he arrives home a few minutes after his apartment building has exploded. Six people died in the fire. Questions haunt him: why did his neighbours die and not him? Is there any meaning to this incident? In response, Gérard goes back into the victim’s past. His investigation leads from Hochelaga through Outremont and Maniwaki to Quebec’s south shore.
