Media Author Review
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"A fast-paced sci-fi thriller with too many contrivances (...) The failings of Self/less reveal a good deal about what has gone wrong with American movies over the last 50 years"
United States
The Wrap
"This new science-fiction thriller borrows the foundation of a much better film — John Frankenheimer’s 1966 'Seconds' — and strips it of any larger meaning"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"A solidly effective sci-fi thriller (...) There are enough twists and turns in Self/less to keep things interesting (...) both on an emotional level (...) and on a moral level"
United States
Variety
"An initially intriguing parable about man's lust for immortality that quickly devolves into a substandard shoot-'em-up designed to rebrand star Ryan Reynolds as a brawny action hero"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Any intelligence is tossed once we get mired in a series of dull chase scenes. (...) Rating: ★★ (out of five)"
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"A conventional-looking films with a screenplay from brothers David and Alex Pastor that raises some fascinating issues and offers a tease or two of a better movie before devolving into a medley of chases and shootouts (...) Rating: ★★ (out of four)"
United States
Entertainment Weekly
"Self/Less suggests plenty of questions about the nature of identity, the morality of scientific exploration, and the price of aging. But the script (...) doesn’t craft characters complicated enough to engage in those concepts"
United States
IndieWire
"'Self/less' is brain/less entertainment, but if there’s any consolation, the impression it leaves is so fleeting that you can soon replace it with better movie memories."
United States
New York Post
"Self/less is a celluloid smoothie blended from dozens of familiar elements, but it's neither tasty nor nutritious (...) Rating: ★½ (out of four)"
United States
Chicago Tribune
"This script by Alex Pastor and David Pastor reveals its secrets predictably, and Singh struggles to make his locations come alive on screen (...) Self/less hews closely enough to the premise of the 1966 John Frankenheimer thriller "Seconds" to qualify as an unofficial remake"
United States
The New York Times
"All of it unfolds in the atmosphere of gaudy, portentous vacuity that is Mr. Singh's trademark."
