Rolling Stone
"With the smashing Jones giving us a female warrior to rank with the great ones and a cast that knows how to keep it real even in a sci-fi fantasy, 'Rogue One' proves itself a 'Star Wars' story worth telling. (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of four)"
United States
Variety
"A gritty war movie (...) Younger audiences will be bored, confused, or both. But for the original generation of “Star Wars” fans who weren’t sure what to make of episodes one, two, and three, “Rogue One” is the prequel they’ve always wanted."
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"[An] exhilarating, good-natured and enjoyable adventure from the 'Star Wars' imaginary universe. (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of five)"
United States
New York Daily News
"Rogue One brings sci-fi saga into new glorious orbit. (...) It stands alone as the best "Star Wars" entry since 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back." Yes, it's that good."
United States
IndieWire
"Despite a galaxy of potential and a number of killer moments, Gareth Edwards' 'Star Wars' spinoff feels painfully forced."
United States
The Playlist
"The film’s execution is, at times, a little disjointed and clunky. But for many, 'Rogue One', will be the 'Star Wars' film they’ve always yearned for: a more adult, rough-edged and passionate picture."
United States
Minneapolis Star Tribune
"'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' shows that the "Star Wars" universe can produce authentic adult entertainment without losing a bit of its frenetic energy (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of four)"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"What fans will get here is loads of action, great effects, good comic relief, stunning locations (...) and some intriguing early glimpses of the Galactic Empire as it begins to flex its inter-galactic power."
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Perhaps the darkest, most action-packed 'Star Wars' instalment (...) [it] establishes its own rhythm, balancing fan demands with grand, poetic moments unlike anything this cinematic galaxy has previously achieved."
United States
USA Today
even an underwhelming Star Wars is a pretty decent Star Wars, but Rogue One misses a real chance to turn the familiar into something remarkable (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of four)"
United States
The Washington Post
"Jones presents a convincing, if monotonously self-serious, heroine (...) Rogue One” represents an unobjectionable exercise in franchise extension. It’s fine. It’ll do. For now (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of four)"
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"A rousing, fast-paced, action-jammed, spectacular-looking thrill ride with spirited performances from a thoroughly likable cast of characters, both human and CGI (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of four)"
United States
Philadelphia Inquirer
"A tepid if fairly competent prequel (...) But It tries so hard to be an epic masterpiece - with self-important speeches and an insanely outsize orchestral score - that it ends up a laughable parody of itself (...) Rating: ★★ (out of four)"
United States
Los Angeles Times
"A swiftly paced, rough-and-ready entertainment that, in anticipating the canonical events of 'A New Hope', manages the tricky feat of seeming at once casually diverting and hugely consequential."
United States
Chicago Tribune
"A little bit 'Guardians of the Galaxy', a little bit 'Dirty Dozen' in its mass wartime slaughter, and a pretty good time once it gets going. (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of four)"
United Kingdom
Empire
"It’s short on whimsy but when it gets going there’s enough risk-taking and spectacle to bode well for future standalones. (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The New York Times
"Plots and subplots are handled with clumsy expediency (...) There are too many characters, too much tactical and technical explanation, too much pseudo-political prattle."
